Write and publish a blog post
Start a post, write the text, choose a category and publish it on your blog.
Blog posts are the articles on your blog: tips, guides and news for your customers. Each post gets its own page on your website, shows on your blog page, and goes out in your RSS feed.
Start a new post
- Go to Content → Posts and click Add New Post.
- Type the title in the big box at the top (1). This is the headline (H1) visitors see.
- PageShift makes the post's address from the title. To change it, click Edit (2) next to Permalink, type the new address and press Publish or Save Draft.
- Write your text in the Content box (3). Use Heading 2 for each main section; the headings become the "In this article" menu on the post.
- When you're ready, click Publish (4).
The panel on the right is the SEO Analysis. It checks your post as you type (focus keyphrase, title length, headings, links, alt text) and gives it a score. Green dots are fine; red dots are suggestions.
The Content toolbar
The Content box works like a word processor. Besides headings, bold, italic, lists and links, its toolbar has buttons to:
- insert an image, or a video, audio file or PDF, from your Media library;
- insert a YouTube or Vimeo video (paste its link);
- insert a Button (text, link, Filled or Outline, Left or Center);
- add a shortcode with the [ ] button (see Shortcodes and embeds);
- add a table, a quote or a divider, and view the HTML code.
When the box is narrow, some buttons move under ••• at the end of the toolbar.
Choose a category and an excerpt
In the Category box on the right, pick one category. To make a new one on the spot, type its name in Or add a new category; it's created when you save. See Organize posts with categories.
Further down, the Excerpt box holds one or two sentences. They're shown on your blog cards, and used as the meta description when you leave that empty.
Save, preview and publish
The Publish box shows the post's Status (Draft, Scheduled or Published).
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Save Draft | Saves without publishing. Visitors can't see a draft. |
| Preview | Opens the post in a new tab as it will look, including changes you haven't saved. |
| Publish | Puts the post live. On a published post this button says Update. |
| Move to Trash | Takes the post off your site. You can restore it from the Trash. |
After publishing you see Post published. and a View Post button next to the permalink.
Addresses PageShift won't accept
PageShift checks the title and address when you save:
- Add a title for this post. The title can't be empty.
- Another page already uses the URL … Every page and post needs its own address.
- Post URLs can't start with /blog/category/. That part of your site is for category pages.
- That URL is reserved by the system. Addresses starting with /admin/, /app/, /storage/, /assets/ or /uploads/ belong to PageShift.
Click Use title to build the address from the title again.
Revisions and autosave
- Revisions: every time you save a change, the version before it is kept. The Revisions box (bottom right) lists the last ones with the date and who saved them. Click Restore to go back; your current version is saved as a revision first.
- Autosave: while you type, PageShift keeps your unsaved work in this browser every few seconds. If your browser closes, open the post again and click Restore them in the yellow bar (or Discard).
