Lessons and the course outline

Write lessons in the lesson library, arrange them into sections in a course outline, and choose when each lesson opens.

Every lesson, quiz and homework lives once in the lesson library. A course outline puts them in order under section headings such as "Week 1: Know your roof". Because a lesson is stored once, you can use it in several courses: change it once and every course shows the new version.

Administrators, coordinators and the teacher who created a course can change its outline. Teaching assistants can't change lessons.

Add a lesson to a course

The quickest way is from the course's outline, so the lesson lands in the right course.

  1. Go to Teaching → Courses and click Outline next to the course (or Add lessons for a new course).
  2. Click Create a new lesson.
  3. Type the Title (1), for example When to call a roofer.
  4. Type About how long (minutes) (2). Students see it in the outline.
  5. Choose the Type of the first block (3) and fill it in. A text block uses the same editor as your pages.
  6. Leave Add it to the outline of your course ticked, and click Add lesson.
Adding a text lesson

After saving, the lesson's page shows its Blocks. Add more blocks under it, for example a video after the text, and move them with the arrows. Click Preview to see the lesson as a student.

Block type What it holds
Text Words, headings, lists, pictures and tables
Video A YouTube, Vimeo or Bunny Stream link (it plays inside the lesson), or a video file
Audio A recording, as a full player or as a small ▶ word button
PDF or file A worksheet or handout: Choose from Media, Use a file from another lesson or Upload from your computer
Embed Google Slides, Docs, Forms, Canva, Padlet and similar
Link Any web page. Students open it in a new tab

Arrange the outline

Teaching → Courses → Outline shows the course's sections and lessons in the order students see them.

  • Reorder: drag a row by its ⋮⋮ handle (1), or use the ↑ and ↓ arrows.
  • When it opens (2): choose Open right away, After the lesson before it is done, From a date, or Days after the student joins. This is how you release one lesson a week, for example.
  • Add lessons from the library: tick lessons under Add lessons, then click Add to the outline (3). They're added at the end.
  • Create a new lesson (4), New quiz, New homework or New flashcards or game start a new item for this course.
  • Add a section: type a name such as Week 2: After the storm and click Add section. Drag the section to its place. Use Rename or Remove to change it.

Remove takes a lesson out of this outline only. It stays in the library.

The lesson library

Teaching → Library lists every lesson, quiz, homework and game, with its type, how many courses use it, its owner and when it was last changed. Filter by type, category, course or owner, or search by title.

The lesson library

The buttons at the top add a lesson (1), a quiz (2), homework (3), or flashcards and a game.

  • Share with the school (on the lesson): other teachers can use it in their courses. Only the owner or an administrator can change it.
  • Make a separate copy: makes your own copy to change without changing the original everywhere.
  • Delete lesson: removes it from the library and from every outline.
