PageShift Help

Edit from your live website

Use the editor tools button on your own website to open a page in the admin, check and fix its SEO, and see the page as visitors do.

When you're signed in to PageShift and look at your own website, a round editor tools button shows on every page. Only you see it: visitors never do.

Open the editor tools

  1. Sign in to the admin, then open your website (click your website's address at the top of the admin).
  2. Go to the page you want to change.
  3. Click the round button with the pencil (1). It sits at the top left, under the header.

The menu shows the page's name and status, for example Page · Published, and:

Item What it does
✎ Edit this page (2) Opens the page's settings screen in the admin. From there, click Edit with PageShift.
◎ SEO (3) Opens the SEO panel for this page (below). The number is the page's SEO score.
+ New page / + New blog post Starts a new page or post.
▦ Dashboard Opens the admin dashboard.
◌ View as visitor (4) Hides the editor tools, to see the page exactly as visitors do.
↻ Clear cache Makes sure visitors get a fresh copy of every page.

The small dot on the button shows the page's SEO score at a glance: green is good, orange needs work, red is poor.

Check and fix SEO on the live page

  1. Click ◎ SEO in the menu. The SEO for this page panel opens on the right.
  2. At the top: the score, and how the page may look in Google results.
  3. Checks on this page tests the page as it is now: title and description length, the focus keyphrase in the headline and first paragraph, word count, one main heading, alt text on pictures and links to your other pages. ✅ passes; ⚠️ needs work.
  4. Under SEO settings, change what you need on the General, Social, Schema or Advanced tab.
  5. Click Save. The panel shows ✓ Saved.

These are the same settings as in the page's SEO box in the admin. Open the full editor takes you to the page's settings screen. The SEO section of this guide explains each setting.

View as visitor

View as visitor hides the editor tools and the notes only editors see, in this browser tab. A small faint button stays at the bottom left: click it to bring the editor tools back.

Clear cache

PageShift keeps a ready copy of your pages so they load fast, and updates it when you publish. If a change doesn't show for visitors, click ↻ Clear cache. The menu confirms Cache cleared.

Move or turn off the button

  • Drag the round button to another place on the screen. PageShift remembers where you put it.
  • Click it to fold the menu away; click again to open it.
  • To turn it off, open your Profile in the admin and untick Show the editor pill on your website's pages, then click Save appearance. See Your profile and how the admin looks.

If it doesn't show

  • Sign in to the admin again in the same browser. The button only shows while you're signed in.
  • If the menu says Signed out, your sign-in has expired: click Sign in.
  • Check that the button isn't turned off in your Profile.
