Preview and switch themes

Try a ready-made theme on your own site, switch to it, undo it, or save your design as a theme.

A theme is a complete look for your site: colors, fonts, headings, shapes and extra styles, often with its own header, footer and blog layouts, and page templates for new pages. Your logo is always kept.

The Themes screen

Go to Design → Themes. The first card, Your own design (1), is the look you set in Design Settings. Then comes one card per installed theme, with two small samples (dark and light), a description and what it includes, for example "Layouts: Header, Footer, Blog post, Blog list, 404".

The Themes screen

The card marked Active is the one your visitors see. Use the Columns buttons at the bottom to show the cards in 1 to 4 columns.

Preview a theme on your own site

  1. On the theme's card, click Preview on my site ↗ (2).
  2. Your site opens in a new tab in that theme's look, with your own pages and text.
  3. Look at a few pages. Close the tab when you're done.

Nothing changes for your visitors while you preview: they keep seeing your current design. The preview link works for 2 hours.

Switch to a theme

  1. On the theme's card, click Activate (3).
  2. PageShift asks to confirm: the theme replaces your current colors, fonts and shapes, and shows its header, footer and blog layouts. Your logo is kept. Click OK.
  3. The card now shows Active, with an Undo button (for example Undo Hearth) and Customize in Design Settings.

After activating, fine-tune the theme's colors, fonts and shapes in Design Settings (click Customize in Design Settings). To change one of the theme's layouts, use Customize in Site Layouts; see Design the header, footer and blog layouts.

Go back

  • Undo (on the active theme's card) brings your site back to exactly how it was before you activated the theme: design, header, footer and blog layouts.
  • Use my own design (on the Your own design card) switches the theme off and brings back your own colors, fonts and layouts.
  • Design Settings → Earlier versions also keeps the design from before each switch; see Undo design changes.

Add, delete and share themes

Add a theme, and Save my current design as a theme
  • Add a theme: under Add a theme, choose the Theme zip (1) and click Upload theme (2). Themes contain only styles, images and fonts, never code; PageShift refuses a zip that isn't a theme or contains code, and an older version of a theme you already have.
  • Delete a theme: click Delete on its card and confirm. A copy is kept in your site's storage. The active theme has no Delete link.
  • Save your design as a theme: under Save my current design as a theme, type a Theme name (3) and click Create theme zip (4), then Download theme zip. Upload it on another PageShift site under Design → Themes. Your logo isn't included.
