Email designs and the email log
Preview the emails your website sends, and use the email log to see whether each one was sent.
Your website sends emails by itself: a note to you when a form comes in, a thank-you to the visitor, subscribe confirmations, password links and more. System → Settings → Email shows what those emails look like and keeps a log of the last ones sent. Only Administrators can open it.
Setting up sending through your own mailbox (SMTP) and the test email are explained in Settings to check on day one.
Preview the email designs
Every email uses your brand: your site name at the top, your colors and your buttons.
- Go to System → Settings → Email and scroll to Email designs.
- Click Preview (1) next to an email to open it in a new tab.
- Or click See all designs (2) to see them side by side.
| Who gets it | |
|---|---|
| New lead | You, when someone sends a form |
| Thank-you reply | The person who sent the form |
| Subscribe confirmation | Someone who signed up for your newsletter, to confirm their email |
| New subscriber | You, when someone confirms |
| Password reset and New user account | A user who forgot their password, or a new user setting theirs |
The previews use sample names and messages, such as "Ana Reyes wants to talk".
The email log
At the bottom of the Email tab, Email log lists the last 20 emails the website tried to send, newest first.
| Column | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| When | Date and time |
| To | Who it was sent to |
| Subject | The email's subject, for example "New sign-in to …" or "Test email from …" |
| Sent via | How it was sent (see below) |
| Result | Sent or Failed. A failed email shows the reason underneath |
Sent via shows:
- smtp: sent through your own mailbox. This is what you want.
- mail: sent with the server's basic mail function. It works, but these emails often land in spam. Turn on sending through your mailbox.
- mail (SMTP failed): your mailbox refused it, so the basic mail function was used instead. Check the mailbox password and server.
- failed: it couldn't be sent at all.
- Another name: when your own mailbox isn't set up, a module (such as the Newsletter's own sending account) can lend its connection, and its name shows here.
