Imported pages and the classic editor

What imported pages and classic content are, how to edit them, and how to move a classic page into the PageShift editor.

Most pages are designed in the PageShift editor. Two kinds of pages work a little differently: imported pages, which came from a website or HTML file you imported, and classic pages, whose content is edited in the older classic editor on the page's settings screen.

How to tell which editor a page uses

Open the page from Content → Pages:

  • If it says This page is built with PageShift, with a large Edit with PageShift button over a preview, its content is edited in the PageShift editor only.
  • If the settings screen shows an editor with + Add section, Visual and HTML, the page has classic content.

Classic pages include new pages made from a starting layout, until you open them in the PageShift editor, and pages that were published from the classic editor. Some pages made by modules, such as newsletter messages, are classic too.

Imported pages

Pages you brought in with Import a website or Import an HTML page open in the PageShift editor like any other page. They keep the design of your old website, so parts of them are imported boxes. When you select one, the settings panel says: Imported from your website: it keeps its original layout and design. Select the text and pictures inside it to edit them.

  • Click the headings, text, pictures and buttons inside to change them, as on any page. See Edit text, pictures and buttons.
  • Items are named after their original text, for example Repairs we handle. The names stay when you change the text. Rename them in Layers with ✎ if that's confusing; see Sections, columns and widgets.
  • You can add new PageShift sections and widgets between the imported ones.

Edit a page in the classic editor

The classic editor on the settings screen
  1. Click any text on the page to change it. Select words to make them bold or italic, or to add a link.

  2. Click a link, button or picture to change it. For a picture, click Replace image.

  3. Point at a section to see its toolbar: move it up or down, duplicate or delete it, + Add below, change its layout (keeps your content), ⚙ section settings (background, spacing, anchor) and ★ save it to My sections.

  4. + Add section (1) opens the section gallery. Search for what you need, for example form, pricing or video, point at a section to preview it, and click it. It's added at the end of the page, or below the section you chose with + Add below.

  5. The arrows (2) undo and redo. Desktop, Tablet and Phone (3) show the page at that width. Full screen (4) gives the editor the whole window.

  6. Click Save Draft, or Update (or Publish) in the Publish box.

The HTML tab (5) shows the page's code, for people who know HTML: Editing raw HTML. Switch back to Visual to see your changes. Scripts added by people who aren't Administrators are removed when the page is saved.

Sections you save with ★ are under My sections when you click + Add section. Global blocks are listed there too: sections you edit once in Design → Global Blocks and that change on every page that uses them.

Move a classic page to the PageShift editor

  1. On the page's settings screen, click Edit with PageShift.

  2. The editor shows the whole page as one Classic section. The note says Your page's current content is kept as a Classic section. Add new sections above or below it; visitors see nothing new until you publish.

  3. To edit each part separately, click the Classic section and then Convert to PageShift sections (1).

  4. Every heading, text, picture and button becomes a widget you can edit. Forms and complex parts become HTML widgets, so nothing is lost. Changed your mind? Press Ctrl + Z.

  5. Check the page and click Update (or Publish).

From then on, the page is built with PageShift and you edit its content in the PageShift editor. The settings screen keeps the title, address, SEO, header and footer and the other settings.

If you later restore a revision from before the page was built with PageShift, the page goes back to the classic editor. See Undo changes and restore old versions.
