Grading and the gradebook

Grade hand-ins and typed quiz answers in the Grading inbox, return them with comments, and see every student's class grade in the gradebook.

Quizzes grade themselves, except typed answers and recordings. Those and every homework hand-in arrive in the Grading inbox. When you return work, the student (and their parents, if allowed) get an email and see the score and your comments.

Teachers and teaching assistants grade the work of their own classes. Administrators and coordinators can grade everything.

The Grading inbox

Click the To do tab, then Grading. Work waits here, oldest first. Filter by class or by quiz and homework.

The Grading inbox

Click Grade (1) to open a hand-in or a quiz.

Grade typed quiz answers

The page shows every answer. Questions graded by themselves already show their points.

  1. Read the student's answer and the Model answer you wrote.
  2. Type the Points (1) and, if you like, a Comment on this answer.
  3. Write a Comment for the student (2). Tick Save this comment to my bank to reuse it.
  4. Click Save the grade (3), or Save and grade the next one.

Grade homework

  1. Read What they handed in: their text, files (Open or Download) or recording.
  2. With a rubric, click a level for every part (1). The Score adds up by itself. Without a rubric, type the Score.
  3. Write a Comment for the student (2), or click a saved comment in the Comment bank to add it. You can also Record a short voice comment.
  4. Click Return to the student, or Return and grade the next one.

Other buttons:

  • Save without returning: keeps your grade as a draft. The student doesn't see it yet.
  • Ask to hand in again: sends it back so the student can improve it.

The gradebook

Click Results → Grades and choose a class. The gradebook shows each student's score on every quiz and homework, their Quizzes, Homework and Attendance averages, the class Grade and the Result (Passing or Below).

The gradebook for Crew Safety, Fall 2026
  • Export (spreadsheet) (1) downloads the gradebook as a CSV file.
  • Below (2) means under the passing mark. Here Tyler missed two sessions and did poorly on the quiz.
  • Set a grade (3) replaces a student's class grade by hand. Type the New grade (%) and Why (required). It's marked with * and logged. Remove the grade set by hand goes back to the calculated grade.
  • This class's grading (4): tick Use this class's own weights to give this class its own Quizzes (%), Homework (%), Attendance (%) and Passing mark (%).

How the class grade is worked out

Part Counts as
Quizzes The average of the graded quizzes (practice quizzes don't count)
Homework The average of the homework scores
Attendance Present = 100%, Late = 100% (or 50%, a setting), Absent = 0, Excused doesn't count
Missing work Counts as 0 after the due date or the quiz's closing time (a setting)

The school's weights are 40% quizzes, 50% homework and 10% attendance, with a passing mark of 75%. Change them in Settings → Grades. A part with nothing graded yet is left out, and the others count in proportion.
