Homework
Give homework with instructions, a due date for each class, points or a rubric, and let students hand in a file, typed text or a voice recording.
Homework asks students to make something: a report, a photo, a worksheet or a recording. Students hand it in on its page, and the teacher grades it in the Grading inbox (see Grading and the gradebook).
Teachers make homework for their own courses. Teaching assistants can't change it, but they can grade it.
Give homework
- Open the course's outline (Teaching → Courses → Outline) and click New homework. (Or Teaching → Library → Add homework.)
- Type the Title, for example
Site safety walk report, and the Instructions. - Click Add homework. It's added to the outline.
Settings
- Under Students hand in (1), tick what they may hand in: A file (PDF, Word, a photo…), Typed text and/or A voice recording.
- Type the Points (2): what it's graded out of.
- Tick Accept late work (it's marked late) (3) if late work is allowed.
- If you like, write a Rubric (4): each Part with Its levels and their points, for example
Excellent 4 | Good 3 | Fair 2 | Needs work 1. With a rubric, the homework is worth the top levels added up. - Type About how long (minutes) and click Save homework.
Summit Ridge's safety walk report has three parts (Hazards found, How the crew fixed them, Photo of the ladder setup), each worth up to 4 points, so it's worth 12.
Set the due date for each class
- Under Due dates, type the Due date and time for each class, and an Opens date if it should appear later.
- Click Save dates.
If a class has no due date, Due (when a class has no due date) applies: a number of days after the homework opens for the student. Students see the due date and the days left, and get a reminder the day before ("Homework due tomorrow" in Settings → Emails).
What students do
On the homework's page, students see the instructions, the points, the due date, the rubric under How it's graded, and a Hand in your work box. They type their answer and/or choose a file, then tap Hand in.
- Files can be a PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, a photo, audio, TXT, CSV or ZIP, up to 10 MB (change the limit in Settings → Grades).
- While the homework isn't graded yet, they can Hand in again.
- Work handed in after the due date is marked Late.
- When it's graded, the score and the teacher's comments appear on the same page, and they get an email.
See who handed in
The homework's page shows Handed in with a count. Click Grade the hand-ins to open the Grading inbox filtered to this homework. Students who haven't handed in by the due date count as Missing in the gradebook (as zero, unless you change that in Settings → Grades).
