Roles and permissions

What each ready-made role can do, and how to make your own role with exactly the right permissions.

A role decides what someone can see and change in the admin. The sidebar only shows what their role allows, and every screen checks it too.

The Roles screen

The ready-made roles

Role What they can do
Administrator Everything, including settings, users, updates and modules
Editor Pages, global blocks, blog posts, categories, case studies, content types and media
Sales Agent Leads, live chats and orders. Can't delete or export data, give refunds or change the website
Content Author Research and write articles in SEO Content Writer, and send them to Posts or Pages as drafts
Teacher Their own classes and students in Courses
School coordinator Every course, class and student, and enrollment and payments in Courses
Teaching Assistant Helps in the classes they're assigned to
Affiliate manager Affiliates, applications, commissions and payouts (no settings)
Bookkeeper Records, invoices, bills and reports in Finances
Finance viewer Finances reports, read only
Team member Their own pages in Team (Me), the directory and the org chart

Team manager Everyone in Team, without the settings

Roles for a module appear when that module is turned on. When a module adds a new feature, the matching ready-made roles get it automatically.

Change a role

  1. Go to System → Roles and click Edit next to the role.
  2. Tick or untick permissions. Each one says in plain words what it allows.
  3. Click Save role.

To go back to PageShift's choices for a ready-made role, click Reset to recommended.

Make your own role

  1. Go to System → Roles and click Add role (1).
  2. Type a Role name, for example Office assistant.
  3. Tick what people with this role can do.
  4. Click Save role.
  5. Give the role to people in System → Users.
