Import a bank statement
Bring the lines of a bank, card, e-wallet or PayPal statement into Finances from a CSV or Excel file, without adding anything twice.
Instead of typing each record, download a statement from your bank, card, e-wallet or PayPal as a CSV or Excel file and import it. You match the columns, check a preview and choose what to bring in. Lines that look already recorded are left out.
Go to Finances → More → Import.
1. Upload the file
- Download the statement from your bank's website as CSV or Excel (.xlsx). Old Excel files (.xls) don't work: open them in Excel and save them as .xlsx first.
- Click the file field (1) and choose the file. It can be up to 5 MB.
- Click Upload (2).
Not sure what the file should look like? Click Download a sample file (3).
2. Match the columns
Finances guesses which column is which from the headings. Check each one:
- Choose the account These lines are in the account (1), for example Business checking.
- Date (2): the column with the dates.
- Dates are written (3): Month first (10/28/2026) in the United States, or Day first (28/10/2026). It only matters for dates like 03/04/2026.
- Description: the column that says what each line was.
- Amount (one column) (4), and how money out looks in it (5): usually Negative (-1,500). If your bank has separate columns, leave the amount empty and choose Or: money in column and and money out column instead.
- Optional: Reference, Name and Category columns. A category column is matched to your categories by name.
- Click Preview.
3. Check the preview
The preview lists every line with its date, amount, a category to choose and a note:
- Already recorded? (1): a record with the same account, date, amount and type already exists, for example the rent you typed by hand. These lines start unticked.
- A red note such as No amount, No readable date or In a closed month (2): the line can't be imported and is skipped.
- Category from a rule: Finances chose the category from what you picked last time.
Then:
- Choose a Category for each ticked line. Lines left without one go to "Uncategorized" and show on the Overview until you sort them.
- Tick or untick lines. The box in the heading ticks them all.
- Leave Remember the categories I choose for these descriptions next time ticked.
- Click Import the ticked lines (3).
The new records open in Money in & out, marked Imported.
Remembered categories
When you import, Finances remembers "descriptions containing this text get this category", for example "XCEL ENERGY PAYMENT" → Utilities. Next month, lines with that text get their category by themselves.
The Remembered categories box on the Import screen lists them. You can also add one while adding a record by hand: tick Remember this category for imported lines with this description.
